House with a Tree
Situated in Jukdong, Yuseong-gu, Daejeon, an important transportation hub and a thriving town at the heart of the Korean Peninsula, this distinctive structure embodies a unique Korean mixed-use concept. It seamlessly integrates lower-floor commercial spaces with upper-floor residential elements in its three-story structure. Covered in a white stucco façade, the building wraps approximately 134m2 of interior space along the property lines. The urban context surrounding the site shows burgeoning commercial activities and is filled with 3-4 story mixed- use buildings, resulting in a monotonous landscape.
In a deliberate departure from the unanimated and conventional spatial arrangement in neighboring structures, the design prioritizes the creation of a building that harmonizes with nature, particularly embracing the presence of trees. Central to this approach is the crafting of a courtyard within narrow confines, ensuring that all interior spaces capture panoramic views and trickling sunlight, creating a tree-filled landscape. Accommodating the client's preferences, the first floor is designated for commercial rental spaces catering to pedestrians, the second floor is allocated as two separate rental units, and the top floor (3rd floor) houses the client's family residence.
Another focal point during the design process is establishing vertical circulation through a rooftop garden unexpectedly linked to a charming attic room (Bang). This design choice facilitates a journey where vertical movement culminates in a serene space. The architectural journey dynamically traces the building's surface along its outer edges, forming vertical connections between distinct programs on the 1st, 2nd, and 3rd floors. Departing from the conventional placement of stairs in the innermost sections of similar mixed-use buildings, the design, in a contrasting inversion, positions stairs along the external skin of the building. This creates ever-changing views indoors, infusing the ascending sense of space with a perpetual sense of intrigue.
